The widespread use of cement pointing where the original building fabric is constructed of lime mortar disrupts the building's ability to 'breathe'. Lime mortar pointing acts as a sacrificial element allowing moisture to escape through the mortar joints. Re-pointing will be more cost effective than large-scale stone replacement.
Before any repointing work is carried out, carefully selected sands are blended together to make various mortar samples. These are left to dry over a period of days. Making these samples at an early stage gives the opportunity to produce a mortar as close as possible in colour and texture.
