Following the Quinquennial Inspection, Abacus Stone Conservation has carried out several areas of lime mortar repointing, lime render, internal replacement of lime plaster, limewash and stone mortar repairs to the Grade II listed church.
Lime pointing to east elevation
Hard cement mortar was removed from the east elevation and replaced with a suitable lime mortar. A selection of mortar samples were made first and allowed to dry. These were then offered up to the wall surface to help choose the correct colour and texture.

Lime render
Lime render repairs at high level had deteriorated. The old lime render was removed back to the sandstone wall and prepared for new lime render. Two coats of lime render were applied to match in with the existing wall line. At low level a piece of slate was inserted above the render to stop water penetrating the masonry wall.

Lime plaster
The lime plaster to the roof loft stair ceiling was badly deteriorated. The timber laths were removed and replaced allowing a good key for the ‘pricking up’ coat and the subsequent coats of lime plaster.

Localised areas of decayed lime pointing were raked out and re-pointed in hydraulic lime mortar. The colour of the mortar was made to compliment the colour of the stonework.
