What a find! Lime mortar reprinting and some brick replacements on an 1872 house.
Amazingly precise, clean, punctual, polite and extremely reasonably priced. Because the work did not take him quite as long as he thought he even reduced the price quoted. What a star!
Keith Roper – December 2017

David and his team lime rendered the front elevation on our house, the work they carried out was excellent, David and his team were both professional and their knowledge and expertise was fantastic, David kept us updated at all stages throughout the work, which is quite refreshing on building work especially on a specialist project dealing with lime render on cob.

I would highly recommend Abacus Stone Conservation to be considered for your projects.

Tom, Weston – October 2017

We first instructed Dave in connection with substantial renovations we are undertaking on our Regency period house in Topsham. We are keen to engage local (master) craftsmen at every opportunity and contacted a couple of stonemasons in the area in connection with replacing our front steps of Portland Stone which were in a very poor condition and in need of replacement, as they were beyond repair. From our very first meeting, Dave has been considerate, thoughtful and a pleasure to deal with. He at all times comes up with appropriate proposals and acceptable fee quotes.

Dave completed the replacement of our front steps (on a basis consistent with application consents and his fee quote) and the completed work has triggered many admiring comments from visitors and passers by as they are so perfectly built with real attention to detail. While the stone used is new, the railings were the originals and have been reinstalled with no doubt some difficulties, but in doing so Dave worked closely with our joiner who commented on ‘what a nice guy Dave is’… we totally agree!

More recently Dave has undertaken further repairs to our property and Dave’s courtesy and attention to detail were common factors again. Dave works in an extremely tidy fashion and at the end of each and every working day he ensures everything is tidy, including one day hosing down our neighbour’s car that was dusty from that day’s work.

Dave is thorough, reliable, consistent and a pleasure to deal with and I would recommend him and his work without hesitation.

Thank you Dave and we look forward to working with you on future phases of work.

Tamara, Topsham – May 2016

I was fortunate to find a copy of “Our Local Expert” in my mail box just at the time that I was getting pretty desperate to get some serious external brick work and rendering done to my 17th century thatched cottage.

I came across Abacus Stone Masons and previously had only considered looking at builders’ websites. I took a look at their website and it appeared that Dave Cormick did just the kind of work that was needed. I emailed Dave and he contacted me the next day to arrange a visit.

They say that you never get a chance to make a first impression and right from the start I found Dave enthusiastic and keen to take on the project of rebuilding my chimney and lime rendering the high wall which is exposed to all the worst weather.

Well Dave and his colleague have just finished and I am totally delighted. I could not have wished for such a great result and nor could I have wished for such considerate, meticulous and professional craftsman. Most of all they could not have done so much work and left the area immaculate.

I have just commissioned Dave to return and expose the old flint stones on an interior wall and can’t wait for him to work his magic once again.

Should you wish to look at the work he has done here – please let Dave know.
Lynn, Honiton – July 2015

Having moved to an Edwardian property in need of renovation and TLC, including repairs to brickwork, repointing and stonework, I was concerned to find people not only with the right skills and expertise but also a sensitivity to the history and architecture of the building to carry out the work. After a lot of researching around I came across Abacus Stone Conservation in Our Local Expert. This was back in 2010. On meeting Dave Cornick I felt I could trust him to do a good job – initially the renovation of a stone-capped brick pillar. I was most impressed with the excellent results and felt no hesitation in asking him to take on all other necessary brick and stone work. I have continued to call on him with subsequent related projects.

Apart from the excellent quality of his work, Dave is conscientious, helpful and happy to advise. I couldn’t recommend him more highly.
Jenny, Sidmouth – July 2015

We bought a converted granary which badly needed re pointing and initially called in builders who started to use Portland cement. We realised this was wrong and after some research found Dave of Abacus Stone who attended and gave us excellent advice on how to restore the walls using the correct materials.

Not only did Dave repoint but also replaced a few stones that were not in keeping and the finished result was nothing short of brilliant.

All our friends and visitors have commented on how nice it looks and it has definitely improved the value of our house.

Dave is now back with us to complete similar work on the other side of our house and we only wished we had called him in, in the first place.

He has an eye for detail, very clean and tidy and can be relied upon 100% to arrive on time and provide excellent workmanship at a very reasonable price.
Bob & Marie, Christow – May 2015

Your work was excellent. I did appreciate your sensitivity to the building and to me and Lottie! It was a great comfort to know that everything was in the best of possible hands. Thank you also for being meticulous and tidy and aware of the needs of the neighbours!
J. Gray, Budleigh Salterton

Our thatched listed 1630 cottage had a Beer stone chimney with very worn copings. Eleven years ago a flue surrounded by vermiculite and chimney pot had been added for a wood burning stove. Since then the flaunching had cracked (only visible from above) and bits of pointing were dropping from the chimney.

Dave Cornick has been brilliant. He introduced a friend who helped with the listing application and a flue expert who removed the vermiculite and inserted a longer insulation wrapped flue and taller chimney pot to bring the chimney outlet to the required 1.8 metres above the thatch ridge.

Dave ordered, carved and fitted four 80 Kg Portland stone copings as Beer stone is no longer available. He cleared everything with the listing authority. He also completed the flaunching and pointing of the chimney.

We and our visitors and neighbours have been delighted by the whole process. They were all brilliant in every way.

My only regret was my fault; I should have involved Dave Cornick sooner; before having the house re-thatched as their scaffolding needs clashed.
P. West, Cotleigh

Thankyou for your care, the scaffolding is down now and it’s very pleasing to see the work you did.
S. Moore, Ide

When I was looking into having my Victorian house repointed, I knew that I wanted someone who used traditional materials and methods. Abacus delivered quality and with attention to detail. My house looks so much better and many neighbours have admired the work.
A. Kyriakou, St. Thomas, Exeter

I had scoured locally & also on the internet for an individual house sign in slate before a family friend recommended your work. I was able to choose the right size of slate & also have the owls engraved by hand not machine. I’m very pleased with the result – with lots of nice comments from people! Thanks for the friendly helpful & excellent service!
Heather,  Ashby-de-la-Zouch

We contracted Abacus Stone Conservation to repoint the front of our Victorian terrace in Exeter and replace some bricks with reclaimed originals. We were absolutely delighted with the final results and the quality of the pointing finish. We found Dave and his team to always be friendly and helpful with honest advice. We have had numerous comments from passers-by enquiring about who did the repointing, which speaks volumes of the quality workmanship.
Luke, St Thomas, Exeter

Abacus Stone Conservation headed by David Cornick was a wonderful find for me in my quest to restore the historic brickwork to my former stables in Whimple. The work took several days to complete, and as I observed as an admiring onlooker, I was mightily impressed by his careful and meticulous attention to detail and concern that everything had to be just right before finishing. David Cornick is one of those dedicated young craftsmen who is to be treasured. He will go a long way. Make the most of him.
J. Schofield, Whimple

Thank you for my stunning sign – I couldn’t be happier with it! It is so beautifully hand crafted to create something totally bespoke which reflects my business so well. A million miles from ‘off the peg’ signs. Excellent customer service and attention to detail as well!
J. Farmer, Perspectives Photography, Broadclyst

Both my wife and I are delighted with the sign … it’s now standing in pride of place at the entrance to our drive. Many thanks for the trouble you took to make sure the end product was exactly what I had asked for.
